YOUR TASK CHECKLIST

Measure before feeding.

Use a soil recommendation and the current fertilizer label, then measure the lawn and calibrate the spreader.

The spreaders are alternatives. This checklist does not prescribe a fertilizer, application rate or frequency.

  1. Read your soil recommendation and check local fertilizer restrictions.
  2. Measure only the area to be treated; exclude beds and paving.
  3. Choose one suitable spreader and follow label settings and calibration instructions.
Spreading / Whirl / 71074

Scotts Whirl hand-powered spreader

Consider for: Small areas and occasional granular applications.

Hand-crank operation; adjustable arm support. A compact option when storing a wheeled spreader would be awkward.

Check before buying

You carry the loaded hopper. Check material compatibility and calibrate for the actual product; bag coverage is not a universal hopper capacity.

Manufacturer information

Spreading / EdgeGuard Mini / 76121

Scotts EdgeGuard Mini broadcast spreader

Consider for: Repeated work across an open lawn.

Wheeled broadcast design; fold-down handle and right-side edge guard. Wheels carry the hopper while you walk longer passes.

Check before buying

Broadcast spread is wider than the wheels. Calibrate, manage overlap and keep material off paving. It is not a precision drop spreader.

YOUR TASK CHECKLIST

Find the dry spot.

Measure coverage first; automate or replace equipment only where the check shows a need.

A timer and sprinkler are optional upgrades, not a substitute for a coverage check.

  1. Place matching catch containers around the watering area.
  2. Run a timed test, record every depth and compare dry with healthy areas.
  3. Adjust coverage first; add a timer only if scheduling is the remaining problem.
Watering / 4060-4

Melnor XT Mini-Turbo oscillating sprinkler

Consider for: Adjusting spray to a rectangular patch.

The 4060-4 design provides adjustable width, range and flow. Separate adjustments help match the spray footprint to the lawn.

Check before buying

Actual coverage depends on pressure, hose losses and wind. Confirm the 4060-4 variant and connection supplied; test the footprint in your yard.

Manufacturer information

Watering / 62061 series

Orbit 62061 single-outlet hose timer

Consider for: One hose-fed watering area.

Battery-powered scheduling, manual override and rain delay. Useful when the problem is remembering to stop or start one hose sprinkler.

Check before buying

One outlet does not provide independent control of several zones. Check faucet fit and operating pressure; a timer cannot correct uneven coverage.

Irrigation catch cups

Matching, straight-sided containers also work. Compare several locations before changing run times.

Rain gauge

Choose clear markings and a stable mount. Keep it away from roofs and sprinkler spray when measuring rainfall.

YOUR TASK CHECKLIST

Repair a small patch.

Confirm the grass and cause of failure, then prepare, water and protect the repair.

Choose seed, sod or plugs separately for your grass and location; this kit does not prescribe a seed mixture.

  1. Identify the grass and why the patch failed.
  2. Choose a suitable recovery season and grass-specific seed, sod or plugs.
  3. Prepare the patch, water as the establishment method requires, and protect it from traffic.

TOOL-TYPE SEARCH

Temporary garden barrier

A visual boundary can protect a repair. Select a barrier for your pet and supervise access.

YOUR TASK CHECKLIST

Remove a few weeds.

Identify the unwanted plant and choose a tool suited to its root and the access around it.

You may need only one removal tool. A recurring infestation deserves a broader diagnosis.

  1. Identify the weed and whether its roots are likely to regrow.
  2. Use one suitable tool and check the removed root.
  3. Revisit the patch and address thinning, mowing or wear that invites weeds.
Weeding / Fiskars four-claw

Fiskars four-claw stand-up weed puller

Consider for: Scattered accessible weeds with graspable roots.

Long handle, foot platform, four serrated claws and an eject mechanism. An option for pulling individual weeds while remaining upright.

Check before buying

Check soil workability and the weed’s root habit. Some weeds regrow from remaining parts; this is not a guaranteed permanent cure or a whole-lawn renovation tool.

TOOL-TYPE SEARCH

Hand weeding tool

Choose a tool suited to the weed’s roots. A weed identification comes before a tool purchase.

TOOL-TYPE SEARCH

Hand lens

Helps examine leaf edges and insects. Photographs and local extension support still matter for identification.

YOUR TASK CHECKLIST

Investigate hard ground.

Separate compaction from drainage and fertility before disturbing the lawn.

A clean trowel can collect many soil samples. Confirm compaction before buying an aerator.

  1. Compare soil resistance in worn and unworn areas at similar moisture.
  2. Check drainage and grass recovery conditions before deciding to core.
  3. Mark obstacles; compare manual work with rental or service for the actual area.
Soil work / ID-6C

Yard Butler ID-6C manual core aerator

Consider for: A small patch with diagnosed compaction.

A step-on hollow-tine tool that removes soil plugs. Useful when you need true coring on a limited area and can manage repeated stepping.

Check before buying

A large lawn is a substantial manual job. Compare rental or professional core aeration; avoid saturated, frozen or severely stressed turf.

YOUR TASK CHECKLIST

Plan a cleaner cut.

Check grass height, access and your existing mower before replacing equipment.

Keep a working mower if it meets the job. Confirm battery bundle and cutting range before replacing it.

  1. Confirm the grass’s suitable cutting height.
  2. Measure access and storage, and assess your current mower.
  3. If replacing it, check the manual, cutting range, full dimensions and battery package.
Mowing / LM2114

EGO POWER+ LM2114 cordless push mower kit

Consider for: A walk-behind lawn where push operation suits the user.

21-inch push mower; manufacturer lists a 1.25–4-inch cutting-height range. A model to compare when replacing a mower and considering the EGO battery system.

Check before buying

This is not the self-propelled SP model. Confirm battery and charger contents with the seller. Check gate clearance, slope instructions and your grass’s cutting height; runtime varies with conditions.

YOUR TASK CHECKLIST

Learn a new lawn.

Start with the measurements that make later purchases more accurate.

Borrow tools where practical. Identify the grass before buying treatments or repair material.

  1. Identify your grass and the areas you actually maintain.
  2. Measure the lawn and observe rainfall, sunlight and wear.
  3. Get a soil test when appropriate before buying fertilizer or amendments.
